"Patriotism is a kind of religion; it is the egg from which wars are hatched." ~ Guy de Maupassant
Budd on the Fourth Amendment, the Home, & the Poor
“For much of our nation’s history, the poor have faced pervasive discrimination in the exercise of fundamental rights. Nowhere has the impairment been more severe than in the area of privacy.” Another element in the difficulty of the poor in the exercising of fundamental rights is that today, we only have the rights that we can afford to defend. And, defending those rights doesn’t come cheap, and the average person simply doesn’t have thousands upon thousands of dollars laying around. I deeply resent that, in order to protect my rights against petty, power-tripping, fee-harvesting bureaucrats who are rarely reined in by their turn-a-blind-eye-bring-in-the-money-to-justify-our-existence supervisors and superiors, I have to remove an incredible amount of money from my family’s resources.
