"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
The Danger of Too Late
Whether in regards to "planting flags", getting assets and cash outside of the U.S., or leaving the U.S. and Western countries, there is to my mind a far greater danger in procastination.
If one acted too early, perhaps, as happened the last several years one might miss out on the stock market boom while sitting on a pile of gold and silver. Granted.
If one acted too early, perhaps their assets and money could have earned them a higher return denominated in a strong dollar, as is likely to persist for at least a few years. Granted.
If one acted too early, perhaps they miss out on the wonderful culture of promiscuity, alcoholism and drug abuse, crappy music, and idiocracy.
But if one acts too late, one risks being trapped by capital controls and people controls, watching the value of the dollar vanish even while precious metals become impossible to acquire at any price.
