"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Rural Underclass' Desire to be Cannon Fodder is Fading
An unintentionally hilarious sob story from an ex-Army recruiter who says that Michigan’s rural poor are hard to enlist because he found them, “a population that preferred seasonal work, maple sugar, trapping, logging, fishing, etc., supplemented by welfare and unemployment insurance, and so the kids we were trying to entice with the offer of Fun-Travel-Adventure saw no real benefit” [to enlisting]. Except for the welfare payments, that looks like a pretty good life.
