"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
Schools for Scandal
“The astounding waste, corruption, and self-dealing of university student governments” certainly explains the equivalently shocking degree of “waste, corruption and self-dealing” we see in the government at every level – local, state and federal. Bribes, threats and intimidation are all a part of the student government process, just like they are in the 'real' government. It is easy to miss the importance of this story. Not only is this where these people learn their ideals, concepts and philosophies regarding how and why to govern, but consider also that far too many officials never work in the real world, they go from college to government, so that is their primary influence and think also about the numbers. As the story points out, these student governments control huge budgets, amounts of money bigger than that of many nations.
