"In 1970, U.S. prisons held fewer than 200,000 people; now that number is 2.3 million, or about 1 in 100 American adults. The inmate population has grown so large that it’s hard to comprehend: imagine the combined populations of Atlanta, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Des Moines, and Miami behind bars."
