Exclusive to STR It's "silly season" again. That time when some of the populace of the United States is all a-twitter about voting. One word you will hear repeated by the candidates in this election is "hope." In fact, Barack Obama even has a book entitled The Audacity of Hope. I have taken a lot of flack for advocating conscientious non-voting over the last four or five years...

In 2004, I did something that I had not done since I turned 18 years old: I didn't vote. At the time, I gave my act a name: conscientious non-voting. Since then, I have studied a lot of pacifist writings and have tried to eliminate acts of aggression in my own behavior whenever practical. I view conscientious non-voting as one step among many I have taken in an attempt towards reducing aggression...

Exclusive to STR January 25, 2006 I believe in non-violence, but perhaps not in the same way you might believe in non-violence. Most Americans think of the Reverend Martin Luther King when they think of non-violence, and rightfully so. He is the 'father' of the modern, American non-violence movement, but did we interpret King's vision correctly?
