Cat Stevens: The Terrorist

Cat Farmer 2004-10-07 16:00
For days now I've been quietly seething. Cat Stevens was probably my first (but never forgotten) crush, over thirty years ago--I still love his music. How dare a bunch of petty bureaucratic tyrants embarrass the US by harassing Cat Stevens? I'm appalled. Why Cat Stevens? Because his name was "on a list" of people with "potential terrorist connections," I guess. God help America . Bless...
A Tax on the Tiny: Air Bags and Nanny Gadgets

It's time to replace my trusty old 1991 Honda, which I have loved since I bought it to replace the earlier Honda that preceded it in my affections. How I've dreaded this day: Now I'm facing a head-on collision with the issue of airbags, and assorted other nanny gadgets that may not be optional whether I buy new or used.
Liberal or Conservative?

Pop quiz. Is it liberal, or conservative, ideology to accept the following notions as true? 1. Education requires a mandatory minimum sentence of twelve years served in a juvenile detention institution in restitution for the crime (or in remedial treatment for the shameful psychological condition) of being a child.
The Great Violet Massacre

Ok, I'm a sap. My lawn in the spring and fall is a mass of violets; white ones, purple ones, white-and-purple ones too ' and forget-me-nots, dandelions, etc. I don't care much for manicured lawns (especially when I'm the manicurist) but for the sake of neighborly relations, today I mowed my lawn. Massacred hundreds, thousands of violets . . . I feel like a murderer. All those sweet little...
Cops and Attitudes and Control, Oh My

Analogies are everywhere; sometimes, mundane events can provide surprising insights into tangentially related phenomena. Recently the daily commute to work has had me thinking about cops, since it's the season when crews bloom along the roadside to fill in potholes, trim branches, or repair damaged utility lines. There's almost always a cop directing traffic at the scene, or watching as cars...
Three Chickens and a Fox

Once upon a time, there were three chickens who shared a coop, and quarreled amongst themselves constantly over the choicest morsels, their favorite perches, who laid the biggest eggs, or which one the farmer liked best. One day, a fox sauntered by and observed them arguing, so he hid and watched them from the bushes.
Thank You for Not Shutting Up

This column is dedicated to the courageous journalists, activists, and artists who have kept a finger of dissent close enough to the public eye to keep it watchful. Only the fear of becoming blind can prevent blindness on a national scale; the reflexive action of the nation is to close its eye to anything that reflects an unsightly image. Blindness is as blindness does; vision is more...
"Anarchy," or Impending Democracy?

Cat Farmer 2003-04-14 16:00
The current situation in Iraq is ubiquitously misrepresented as being a state of 'anarchy.' What is filling the void left by the absent Hussein regime is mob rule, the dark side of democracy. It's a riotous state of disorder directly caused by the replacement of one form of government by another. It's not caused by an absence of government, but by an excess of government, or a battle for...
Good Morning World, I'm Glad You're Still Here

At 4:25 this morning a bomb dropped, bursting in on the predawn air of my ordinary suburban neighborhood. I awoke with a start; the peaceful sleep of the moment before had exploded instantly into so much shrapnel scattered in a dark bedroom. Images of the destruction around me hung in my mind like dense smoke; I realized that I was thirsty and reached for a bottle of water on the nightstand....
Why Not War

There comes a time to fight for what is right, but that determination must rest with the individual conscience, whether it chooses to fight, support, oppose, or remain indifferent to a cause. Lately voices against war seem lonelier here in America than ever, while voices for war in many other countries are undoubtedly experiencing a similar form of pressure to 'shut up and sit down'.
The Devil Makes a Speech

Hell was agog with the news. There would be a special gathering, and all the officials of Hell were summoned to attend. Word spread like wildfire! The Devil himself would be speaking this evening, and was to make a grand announcement. It was rumored that the affair was to be a real celebration: the rarest of treats, a jubilant day in Hell.
What Anarchism Means to Me

Cat Farmer 2003-02-13 17:00
Anarchism is my declaration of peace with you. It is a repudiation of the use of coercive power to achieve my own ends, or to abet the domination of any man by his fellows, or over his fellows. It is a renunciation of the use and support of structures that function to create discord and disparity among men and between nations, and peddle mayhem and mischief under the aegis of security and...
