Potential legal issues associated with homesteading and mining asteroids. Unsurprisingly, treaties already restrict how property may be homesteaded beyond Earth's orbit.

UN treaties, laws and the rest be damned. If you could get out into space Earth-based state entities would be powerless and without any recourse against you, other than retaliate against left-behind family and associates. And there are remedies for that too. Earth's atmosphere is the 21st century's Berlin Wall.
UN space treaties are reminescent of the Pope's decision to divide the world between Portugal and Spain. Non-Catholic Europe and the non-Western world weren't parties to the decision. Ultimately, I think that the colonization of space will make private law society a reality. Hopefully, I live long enough to see if I am correct or not.
