"At odd hours of the day, there he was, standing against his car with arms folded and cigarette lit, recalling the X-Files 'Cancer Man' character, staring right at me from across the irrigation canal. At first I thought it was curious that he showed up right at the particular times of day that the urge to smoke struck me. Especially since it seemed that he has some kind of day job. But the frequency and predictability of his appearances led me to believe otherwise..."
