"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." ~ H.L. Mencken
What’s Better Than 3D? 4D Movies Soon to Make Their U.S. Premiere
“Theaters today are under pressure to compete with a broadening array of home entertainment delivery systems – like the DVD/Blu-ray-based Redbox, and popular streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Redbox Instant, Hulu, and others. Smart TVs and inexpensive hardware devices designed to enable HML- and HDMI-port equipped standard televisions to wirelessly stream online content have made it increasingly convenient for viewers to stay at home and away from the cineplex.” I am one of many who for varying reasons – cost, content, comfort, etc. – no longer go to movie theaters. The last movie I saw in a theater was Thelma and Louise. I saw it with my sister and we were the only people there. Abandoning movie theaters isn't a new trend, though today's technologies are certainly a game-changer. It is far more pleasant to watch movies at home where you can view at your convenience, have a glass of wine or a margarita or two, enjoy a smoke, don't have to fight traffic, and other comforts and conveniences great and small. I'm not sure even 4-D can compete with that enough to make any long-term profit difference.
